Dr. Sami Ibrahim is a board-certified cardiologist and advanced fellowship-trained electrophysiologist who will join James River Cardiology in August. A Virginia native, Dr. Ibrahim was born in Richmond and is excited to return to the area and serve patients across the James River region.

Dr. Ibrahim completed his undergraduate studies at Emory University, earning a B.S. in Biology. He received his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine, then returned to Virginia for his Internal Medicine residency (2018–2021), General Cardiology fellowship (2021–2024), and will be completing his advanced Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology fellowship (2024–2026) at the University of Virginia Health System, prior to starting at James River Cardiology. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and General Cardiology.

During his tenure at UVA, Dr. Ibrahim has had the distinct privilege of receiving direct mentorship from renowned leaders in the field of electrophysiology, ensuring a proficiency of both traditional and cutting-edge rhythm management and device management strategies. In electrophysiology, he is trained in a full spectrum of procedures including simple and complex device implantations (transvenous pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), subcutaneous ICDs, cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, leadless pacemakers and conduction system pacing devices), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) ablations, atrial fibrillation ablations, atypical atrial flutter ablations, and premature ventricular contraction (PVC) ablations. Dr. Ibrahim recognizes the importance of staying on the forefront of a rapidly evolving field, and his versatility is further demonstrated by using the latest innovations such as pulsed field ablation (PFA) and zero-fluoroscopy techniques. He brings a strong commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care and uses the newest technological advances in rhythm management.

An accomplished educator and researcher, Dr. Ibrahim also developed and led a longitudinal EKG curriculum for UVA's internal medicine residency and has delivered numerous lectures and small group teaching sessions. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at national conferences including HRS, AHA, ACC, and SLEEP. His research interests include atrial arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, and outcomes in heart failure and cardiac arrest.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Ibrahim enjoys staying active with soccer, weightlifting, hiking, and running. He and his wife recently married and share their home with their energetic two-year-old tabby kitten, Leo. Dr. Ibrahim is thrilled to be settling permanently in Richmond and looks forward to providing high-quality, compassionate care and building lasting relationships with patients and colleagues at James River Cardiology.
